To enhance students’ sense of responsibility and ability to contribute to the country and to serve society, to respond to the national rural revitalization strategy and traditional village protection plan, to improve Macau students’ understanding of the national conditions, especially regarding the protection of traditional Chinese villages and rural revitalization, and to promote exchange and friendship between mainland and Macau youth, 16 students and staff from the Cheong Kun Lun College and the Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College conducted a study tour on traditional village protection and rural revitalization in Qianyang Village, Pingnan County, Fujian Province, from July 11 to 17, 2024, with the assistance of Fudan University and the local government.

Students and staff from University of Macau and Fudan University stayed in Qianyang Village together. Every morning, under the guidance of villagers, students took turns making steamed buns and preparing breakfast. After learning the entire process of making steamed buns, student CHAN Chi Weng remarked emotionally, “This is the most delicious steamed bun I’ve ever made.

The students experienced rural life with the villagers and chatted with them about everyday matters. After walking a section of the mountain path that villagers used to take when leaving the village, students couldn’t help but express, “It’s really difficult to travel in and out of mountain villages. It’s hard for the village’s agricultural products to be transported out for sale in the past.”

The students also participated in two experiential learning courses offered by Fudan University: ‘Protection and Development of Ancient Villages’ and ‘The Silk Road and the History of Ancient Ceramic Exports’. Through village surveys and considering local conditions, students attempted to propose practical and feasible action recommendations for the protection and development of Qianyang Village.

Students’ Reflection

CHEN Baohui: In this service-learning experience, I truly faced a stark reality: the hardships of living in remote mountain villages are far beyond what words can fully describe.

LI Xinyao: Every small effort is a contribution towards improving the villagers’ lives.

LUO Tianxi: When Director Dong, the former head of the Village and Town Division of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the State Council, was teaching us, she mentioned that Chinese civilization is rooted in agricultural civilization, and traditional villages are important carriers of this agricultural civilization. Protecting traditional villages means preserving the roots and soul of the Chinese nation! These words left an unforgettable impression on me.

CHEN Aidan: Protecting Qianyang Village is also protecting our history and future.

AO Ieong I Man & WANG Kam: Enabling people to recognize and understand their own traditional culture, and strengthening people’s sense of cultural identity – this is one of the significances of rural revitalization and the protection of ancient villages.

MO Yanbin: Professors’ respect for history and their persistent pursuit of truth, has demonstrated a rigorous approach to scholarship and knowledge. This attitude serves as a guiding light, inspiring us on the path of exploring truth, to seek reality with the most sincere mindset, and to pass on excellent cultural heritage.
