This summer, in partnership with Fudan University, 17 representatives from the University of Macau’s Cheong Kun Lun College and Henry Fok Pearl Jubilee College participated in the “Empowering Rural Revitalization through Education” Service Learning Program in Jiangcun, China. This initiative was designed to integrate students’ theoretical knowledge with practical skills, aiming to explore and enhance China’s rural educational landscape and cultural heritage.
The program began with an intensive three-day theoretical study at Fudan University, where students explored the critical role of education in rural development. They engaged with Interdisciplinary Project-Based Learning to connect theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Following this, participants conducted on-site research in Kaixian Gong Village, the site of Fei Xiaotong’s famous book “Peasant Life in China.” Collaborating with local students, they conducted impactful research and developed cultural artifacts, enriching the local community’s educational and cultural legacy. Projects encompassed creating a series of paper cards that illustrated Fei Xiaotong’s deep connection with Jiangcun, as well as producing postcards capturing the evolution of educational perspectives across generations. Additionally, teams documented local ancient bridges, celebrating their historical significance through brochures and ballads. AO U IAN, a CKLC Student majoring in primary education, reflected on the experience, stating, “Integrating academic knowledge into the local children’s education provided a deeper understanding of theoretical application, embodying the principle of mutual teaching and learning.”
The program deepened participants’ appreciation for Jiangcun’s history and culture and promoted the exploration and inheritance of local educational and cultural resources. Moreover, students broadened their understanding of East China’s rich history and culture through visits to historical sites and museums in Shanghai and Jiangsu. The Service Learning Program facilitated a meaningful dialogue on the role of rural education in revitalization. A series of interactive activities have not only enriched the friendships among students but also bolstered the academic relationship between Macau and Shanghai, fostering collaboration and cultural exchange.
